I saw The Descendants tonight with my sister, and before the movie was done I had to contain an ugly cry. Oh my stars, I thought I was going to lose it, but another girl in the theater had a break-down. She was crying as if we were watching her life story unfolding on the big screen. Her break-down broke the ugly cry train that was chugging its way to the surface. It was a great movie, and I have to say Scottie stole the show. I watched her and thought, this is the kind of smart aleck kid I’m going to have in the future, and I should prepare myself now.
The cinematography was fantastic! I kept imagining myself moving to Hawaii, and I was taken away with the soundtrack of the film as well. Yes, George Clooney can act, but we already knew that. I loved his rapport with Shailene Woodley from Secret Life of the American Teenage. It was good seeing her in a more mature role for once.
All in all, I wouldn’t advise going to see this film if you’re in a bad mood, but other than that I would suggest seeing it if you can. It’s good for a cathartic cry. Also the plot is one that I feel resonates more since it’s not an easy-fix situation (as most Hollywood movies are). The characters are complex, the situations are messy and it really makes you think afterward.
